Nachdem der UMPC (Origami) kein iPod-Killer wurde, entwickelte Microsoft mit Zune, der am 14. November erscheinen soll, eine schlechte iPod-Kopie. Interessantes Feature ist die Wifi-Fähigkeit, die jedoch alle Titel mit einem Zwangs-DRM belegt, ob gekauft oder selbst erstellt. Nennenswerte Marktanteile sind wohl eher langfristig angestrebt.Ein interessanterer UMPC könnte dagegen mit Hilfe von Intel kommen, die mittelfristig ein Gerät konzipieren möchten, das man wirklich in der Hand halten kann. Paul Otellini sagte auf dem Intel Developer Forum im September 2006:
"The next inflection point though for mobility is really what I call Broadband2Go. What do I mean by that? I mean by that we have a personal, portable, broadband Internet available to us as individuals wherever we're going."
"To make this happen, to make it a reality we need two things. We need pervasive wireless broadband and we need a new class of ultra mobile computers that we could literally carry around in our hand."
